The Poet, The Prophet, The Wolf (Live)

from Take It With A Shaker (Live at Logan Street Sanctuary) by Ryan M. Brewer

/

about

A songwriter's job is two-fold: he must at once be clever in his art and wholly relatable in its presentation. It is, in most cases, an impossible task. (There are far more failed artists that there are successful ones)
The kicker is that the best artists aren't concerned with either of these things. They aren't writing for acknowledgement from others of even from themselves. They're writing because they have to...because if they don't, the songs will dismantle them from the inside out. They are simultaneously a poet, a prophet and a wild animal living in civilized society.

lyrics

i was born under cover of cold...
somewhere safe to be sorry and bold.
i was told that this chip on my shoulder was a badge of honor beholden to none of my peers.

their deaf ears, grinding fears...make sharp shears.
this black sheep's mother weeps oceans deep.
wouldn't you know, it'd float off in the gulf?
the poet, the prophet, the wolf.

we're all searching for shelter from storm...
somewhere safe to be sorry and warm.
we're all told that these burdens we carry will be much less heavy when married, so we want what we're shown.

our deaf ears, grinding fears...make sharp shears.
this black sheep's mother weeps oceans deep.
wouldn't you know, it'd float off in the gulf?
the poet, the prophet, the wolf.
wouldn't you know, it'd float off in the gulf?
the poet, the prophet, the wolf.

mother mary, round and full of faith, rolled off the wall and down from grace.
all of the king's own men were indisposed trying to put the whole world back together again.
so she bled.
so she bled.

their deaf ears, grinding fears...make sharp shears.
this black sheep's mother weeps oceans deep.
wouldn't you know, it'd float off in the gulf?
the poet, the prophet, the wolf.
wouldn't you know, it'd float off in the gulf?
the poet, the prophet, the wolf.

A singer/songwriter by trade, Ryan M. Brewer is more accurately described as a traveling musical storyteller. Having always placed the primary importance on lyricism, his songs tend to float effortlessly between genres...each one falling precisely where it needs to in order to most accurately tell the story. And that's all that matters - songs and stories. ... more
